Do 3G Networks Reach You?
Monday January 12, 2009
Many 3G networks in Australia do not extend beyond metropolitan locations, but even worse, many even fail to adequately cover the outskirts of such areas. This is important to remember if you wish to take full advantage of the benefits of 3G, especially if you live in the outlying suburbs of a major metropolitan centre.
Not all networks for 3G in Australia have the same level of coverage. If you have previously used an extensive 3G network such as the Telstra Next G 3G network and have had no reception problems where you live, changing to a smaller service provider could mean a much smaller network range. You should thus check to see whether the 3G networks you are interested in will cover the area in which you live. This can be achieved simply by inviting friends over to your place and checking to see what kind of reception they get on various networks.
There is another advantage to asking friends about their service providers. Many 3G networks for 3G mobile phones offer bonuses for talking to people on the same network. If you find that most of your friends are on a particular network, it may be worthwhile looking into what that network offers. Of course, if those same friends find they get no reception in your area, you may want to consider avoiding that network instead.
