Do you have 3G network coverage?

2 July 2008

3G capable mobile phones are becoming increasing popular in Australia and with the excitement of the Apple iPhone coming on July 11, 3G networks can expect their usage to increase. But just how much 3G network coverage is available in Australia?

While most carriers in Australia support 3G services, their coverage is not all the same. Telstra currently has the largest 3G network coverage, extending from major cities to some regional areas. Telstra is looking to expand their 3G network over the next few years.

Optus is also working on expanding their 3G coverage. Currently Optus have coverage to most major cities. If 3G services aren't available, your mobile phone will roam to GSM/GRPS areas.

Virgin Mobile shares the Optus 3G network.

Several networks don't provide 3G network coverage to Hobart and Darwin. Instead these areas are limited to GSM and GRPS networks. Each carrier has different 3G services and plans. When looking for a mobile phone with 3G capabilities, check with your carrier to see where their 3G network coverage extends to.
