Technological Benefits of 3G

Wednesday October 15, 2008

The technological benefits of 3G are many, but not all of them will be useful to everybody. Some of what 3G offers is more fulfilment of promises past than useful technologies that will aid your communications. Mobile video telephony, for instance, is entirely possible with 3G in Australia. It just isn't used all that often as it costs extra, is awkward to utilise in public, and it doesn't provide much of an advantage in communicating. While the Telstra Next G 3G network may try to push video telephony as much as possible, familiarity has bred contempt rather than wonder when it comes to video telephony, so this advancement has somewhat fallen by the wayside.

What was predicted far less than video telephony and is actually useful, though, is mobile 3G Internet access. This is one of those features of 3G that is genuinely helpful, for both business 3G use as well as personal 3G use. Early 3G mobile phones did not implement Internet access exceedingly well, but newer phones such as the Apple iPhone 3G and the Nokia N95 3G Mobile Phone have been praised for quite comfortable Web browsing.

The odd thing about 3G is that while it has allowed for technological advances that have been anticipated for quite some time, it is the ones that weren't as demanded originally that have become so popular. Few people care about video telephony and MMS when they can browse the Web, send emails and download their favourite shows as well as stream live sporting events with their 3G mobile phones. We seem to have entered a new age of technology where before everyone incited awe, while now technological advances are mundane. The future is now, and we expect to stay in it.
